Review and revise as needed to improve the following:

  • the clarity of ideas and information
  • the development of ideas and information
  • organizational pattern and structure
  • style that is consistent and appropriate for purpose and audience (formal, informal, or semi-formal)
  • diction that is precise, objective, and creates an appropriate tone
  • sentence effectiveness, including use of parallel constructions and the placement of phrases
  • sentence effectiveness, including placement of dependent clauses


Review and edit as needed for the following:

  • to include a variety of complete, controlled sentences
  • to avoid unintentional splices
  • to avoid unintentional run-ons
  • to avoid unintentional fragments
  • to use semicolons (;) to set off phrases and clauses as appropriate
  • to use colons (:) to set off phrases and clauses as appropriate
  • to use dashes (—) to set off phrases and clauses as appropriate
  • to use commas (,) to set off clauses as appropriate
